JERSEYVILLE – Olin Community Credit Union has been recognized as the Jersey County Business Association Business of the Month for July.
“Through our involvement in the various aspects of the Jersey County Business Association and the networking opportunities it provides, the credit union has been able to increase awareness in the community and grow new business,” said Amber Scott, vice president of marketing for the credit union.
Located at 300 West County Road, the Jerseyville branch employs 12 employees eager to assist customers with a range of financial services, including basic savings, checking and money market accounts, individual retirement accounts and share certificates. The credit union also offers a variety of personal loan options, including autos, boats, motorcycles, campers and signature loans. Visa credit cards, mortgage loans and home equity loans are available, and specialized services such as investment services and business accounts ensure convenience and versatility for members. Anne Sturgeon serves as branch manager.
Olin Community Credit Union is celebrating 76 years in business, employing 166 employees. Credit union membership is available for residents of Jersey, Green, Macoupin, Calhoun, Fayette, Montgomery, Madison and Bond counties, as well as anyone who is employed in those counties.
In addition to financial services, Olin Community Credit Union remains actively involved in the community, supporting organizations through sponsorships, donations and staff involvement. Recently, the credit union raised nearly $2,000 for the Jersey County Relay for Life. The credit union supports the JCBA through committee involvement, event sponsorship and participation and annual business after-hours hosting.
Employees also have played host to events at Jersey Community High School, teaching students the value of financial management. According to the Web site, the brass/SHOW is “a biweekly video podcast about money and ‘real world stuff’ for young adults, by young adults. Episode topics range from preparing for a job interview and opening an IRA to finding a cheaper way to do the things young people love to do.”
The credit union mission statement, “Exceeding Member Expectations,” “reflects our goal to improve our members’ financial lives. We strive to serve our members with the best service, lowest rates, highest dividends, and a wide array of financial products.”
“Our members in Jerseyville (and throughout the River Bend) are all owners of Olin Community Credit Union,” Scott said. “As owners, they are able to receive the benefits of credit union membership – competitive savings rates, low loan rates and exceptional service.”
The credit union was formed in 1934 by 35 charter employees of the Western Cartridge Co. and Equitable Powder Manufacturing Co. By the end of that year, the number of members already had grown to 651.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the company went through a series of acquisitions, prompting the Western Cartridge Employees Credit Union to change its name to the Olin Employees Credit Union in 1954, and the Olin Community Credit Union in 1998. In 1965 the first official credit union building in East Alton, followed by locations in Godfrey (1992), Alton (1998), a corporate headquarters in Bethalto (2002), and Jerseyville (2006), with a Wood River branch slated to open later this year.
